2nd Annual Summer Chalk Art Festival at Southgate Plaza

Enter the most colorful contest of the summer at Southgate Plaza, located at Florin Road and Franklin Boulevard in Sacramento. During the 2nd Annual Summer Chalk Art Festival at Southgate Plaza from 9AM to 3PM on Saturday, September 8th, the public will enjoy free activities, have the opportunity to win prizes and walk through the center to view the amazing sidewalk canvas of artwork.
Highlight of the event is the Summer Chalk Art Contest. Southgate Plaza will award more than $3,000 in prizes. Entry information and form is below:

Contest Eligibility

  • Entry is free.
  • Contest is open to youth, age seven or older, and adults.
  • Theme: What Does Sacramento Mean to Me?
  • Chalk art entries will be judged by the following age categories: ages 7-11, ages 12-14, ages 15-18 and age 18+ (adults).

How to Enter

Entry forms may be submitted in advance, or on Saturday, September 8th:

-Advance Entry: Email by Thursday, September 6th to Tim Murphy at
tmurphy@newmarkmerrill.com; or you can bring the completed entry form to the Management Office, located on the back side of Southgate Plaza, opposite of Baskin Robbins. Address is 4542 Florin Road, Sacramento, CA 95823. Or fax to 818.710.6116
Contestants who submit entry forms in advance will get pre-assigned chalk art locations. OR
-Bring completed entry form to the Chalk Artist Check-In, near the area located outside of Walmart Neighborhood Market at Southgate Plaza. Early check-in starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 8th is recommended to allow artist enough time to complete the entry before the judging begins at 3PM.

Chalk Art “Street Canvas”

  • Each artist will be assigned a 5’ x 5’ space on the sidewalk area at Southgate Plaza.
  • Contestants can begin creating their chalk art drawings at 9AM.
  • Artwork must be completed by 3PM for judging.
  • Entries must be themed to the What Does Sacramento Mean to Me? Get creative with your chalk art drawings by giving a nod to all things Sacramento.
  • The completed chalk art length OR width must measure a minimum of four (4) feet. ONLY one, either the length or the width, must meet the minimum 4’ measurement and fit within the 5’ x 5’ space.
  • FREE Sidewalk chalk, in a variety of colors, will be provided while supplies last, however artists may also want to bring their own chalk.
  • ONLY sidewalk type chalk can be used.


  • The judging begins at 3PM.
  • The contest judges will walk through the center to view the themed entries.
  • The judges will select winners based on the following criteria:
    -Creative expression of What Does Sacramento Mean to Me? theme
    -Artistic talent based on age category
    -Use of color
    -Design such as shading, layout, artistic impression
    -Overall impression
  • Winners, who will be announced at 4PM, must be present at the award ceremony.


  • $3,000+ in prizes
  • Youth Categories:
    -Prizes will be awarded to the winners of EACH youth category: ages 7-11, ages 12-14, ages 15-18: First Place: $200; Second Place: $150; Third Place: $100
  • Adult Category (18+)
    -First Place $500
    -Second Place: $350
    -Third Place: $200

  • People’s Choice Awards; selected by vote of event attendees
  • -$150 for each age category: ages 7-11; ages 12-14; ages 15-18; age 18+ adults
